Lee's Summit was originally named "Town of Strother" around 1850 by William B. Howard in honor of his wife, Maria D. Strother. Following his arrest and parole during the Civil War, though, Howard and his family moved south, leaving a budding community that was eager to develop and grow. The community later changed the name of the city to honor late settler Dr. Pleasant John Graves Lea. The name was misspelled "Lee," which was later retained since the misspelling had already been put into circulation. |

Modern day Lee's Summit is home to a population of more than 91,000 residents according to the 2010 U.S. Census. The city rests comfortably as the sixth-largest city, not only in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, but also in the entire state. In addition to its size, though, Lee's Summit carries multiple distinctions. Most notably, Money Magazine offers two accolades, listing Lee's Summit twice in its "100 Best Cities"-rating it 44th in 2006 and 27th in 2010.
Lee's Summit features a variety of attractions from its Farmers Market and historic cemeteries to the Summit Waves Family Aquatic Center, a historic downtown district, the Stonehaus Farms Vineyard and Winery, and the Lee's Summit Historical Society Museum. Another historic building, the Historic Longview Farm, was constructed around 1913 by the man who built the city's first skyscraper, lumber baron R.A. Long. Another major attraction for the community is Lee Summit's annual Oktoberfest.
