ABOUT THE FORD ESCAPE XLT
The Ford Escape XLT was announced in 2000 as a smaller SUV than the Ford Explorer. However, the Escape is larger than some of its compact SUV competitors. The vehicle has been in production for two generations, but changes in the second generation, which began in 2008, were geared at updating the interior, which includes Ford's navigation system in their signature Ice Blue color. Initially, the Ford Escape was equipped with a 2.0-liter Zetec inline 4-cylider engine with manual transmission or 3.0-liter Duratec V6 engine with four-speed automatic transmission, but the current Ford Escape XLT comes with a 2.5-liter Duratec I4 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. The second-generation Ford Escape XLT also received some minor exterior redesigns, including larger headlights on a new grille. The XLT is available in all-wheel drive, unlike the base XLS models, which are front-wheel drive only. Ford built the Escape on the CD2 platform, based on Mazda's sedan and station wagon GF platform. As a result, the Ford Escape is not equipped to handle heavy-duty off-road terrain, but rather frequent road use and some light recreational driving, making it an ideal car for versatile drivers who split time between the city and more rural areas. |

For safety features, the Escape models come with a SecuriLock system that includes a radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip embedded into the key. The car will not start for any key that lacks the RFID
chip, even if properly cut, and as a result the Escape ranks low among theft reports. Escapes are also equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Air bags are standard on the vehicles, which received five stars for driver protection and four stars for passenger protection in a 35 mph frontal impact test administered on the first-generation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Escape is also constructed with a unibody design, rather than a body-on-frame like most other midsized SUVs, making it lighter and easier to handle.
