ABOUT THE HUMMER H3

The H3 - the third generation of Hummers - was introduced in 2006 as a response to critics of the H2, who claimed the earlier model was too slow, impractical and cramped for its size. The H3 comes equipped with a 3.5-liter straight-5 cylinder L52 engine with 220 hp, with either a five-speed manual or Hydra-Matic 4L60-E four-speed automatic transmission (14 mpg city/18 mpg highway). In 2007, Hummer bumped that up to a 3.7-liter engine with 239 hp, addressing the popular complaint that the 2006 H3 was still too slow for everyday travel. In addition, H3s handle off-road terrain exceptionally well despite being Hummer's smallest model, making them a solid fit for recreational drivers. Hummer also worked to make the H3 interior roomier than previous models.

H3s feature two-speed full-time all-wheel drive, allowing them to take on water and steep grades. H3s can tow up to 4,500 pounds with the straight-5 engine and automatic transmission. For safety features, the H3 boasts electronic stability control, four-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), brake-controlled traction control, LATCH child-seat anchors and tire pressure monitoring. After 2008, side-curtain airbags were also standard on all models. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2008 H3 five stars for frontal driver, rear side driver and rear side passenger safety; four stars for frontal passenger safety; and three stars for AWD rollover safety.
Hummer H3
The Hummer brand name was announced in 1992 with the unveiling of its first model as a civilian version of the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or Humvee, a military vehicle manufactured by AM General. Humvees, used primarily by the U.S. Air Force, were valued for their ability to handle difficult off-road terrain in the Middle East. In 1998, GM bought the brand from AM General and began marketing the Hummer as H1 in 1999. The H2 was released in 2003, followed by the H3 in 2006. In 2010, a year after GM declared bankruptcy, GM announced a deal to sell the Hummer brand to the Chinese company Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd. The bid fell through, however, and GM later announced it would not continue to produce the vehicles. In 2010, Hummer production stopped. Today, it remains a popular option among customers in the midsize SUV market looking for a heavy-duty automobile for off-road terrain, recreational driving and bold design.
